Prepare your home for spring snowmelt and heavy rains
Spring Flood Prevention
Spring in Idaho brings snowmelt and heavy rains that can overwhelm drainage systems and flood homes. Take these steps before spring arrives to protect your property.
Exterior Preparation
- Clean gutters and downspouts of debris
- Extend downspouts 6+ feet from foundation
- Check grading—should slope away from house
- Clear debris from yard drains
- Inspect foundation for cracks
- Trim trees and remove dead branches
Basement & Crawlspace
- Test sump pump before spring rains
- Install battery backup for sump pump
- Check for foundation cracks or seepage
- Ensure floor drains are clear
- Store valuables off the floor
- Consider a water alarm system
Know Your Risk
- High Risk: Homes near rivers, streams, or low-lying areas
- Moderate Risk: Homes with basements in flood-prone zones
- Lower Risk: Homes on higher ground with good drainage
Even "low risk" homes can flood during exceptional events. Preparation is always worthwhile.
